Accessibility
Inclusivity
I want to begin by sharing my own lived experiences of disability.
I’m an ADHDer who’s been a carer for family members with invisible and visible disabilities. Knowing I’m ADHD has helped me to understand and advocate for what I need. (Read up on ADHD and executive function!)
I spent nearly two years working for a charity that supports people with visual impairments, often the first point of contact for anyone seeking support after experiencing sight loss.
My personal experiences and seeing how a lack of inclusivity affects my friends, have fuelled my passion for these important values. I want to help make the world more inclusive and accessible for all - helping to create equity so we can all do well together.
My Commitment to Accessibility and Inclusivity
I work with everyone from all backgrounds and genders. I’m a fierce ally of all communities, including people who are neurodivergent, LGBTQIA+ and those in ethnic minorities. (I’m aware that some people prefer the term global majority.) I’m committed to working towards practices that make my space feel safe and that you feel heard. I am always open to constructive feedback on how I can improve or where I may get things wrong. I’m dedicated to using inclusive language and diverse representation in the copy and materials I create.
As part of my commitment to active allyship, I provide feedback to clients on any practices where I believe they may be falling short in terms of inclusivity. If you’re not open to those conversations, please don’t apply to work with me.
I won’t speak in communities, on stages, or work with anyone who has not considered inclusivity and accessibility in their line-ups or physical spaces. In the very least, I will not be a part of all white line-ups. Please consider this before contacting me. I will not tolerate any hate or discrimination that contradicts these values, and I reserve the right to end my relationship with you at any point because of this.
NOTE: Being neuro-inclusive means being accepting of both neurodivergent and neurotypical needs, this can include those with mental health diagnoses and people who identify as being highly sensitive. You do not need a diagnosis to identify yourself as neurodivergent to me.
This is not an exhaustive list of my commitments, or a ‘tick list’ - I’m always open to understanding and learning more and regularly review my practices.
As a result, I am always open to feedback. If you find there is anything you are unable to access on the website or through working with me, or you feel I can improve in any way around inclusion and accessibility, you can contact me by email on hello@pageonestudio.co.uk, or please feel free to DM me or voicenote me on my Instagram www.instagram.com/pageonestudio_
Social Media
Add captions to all videos
I am super happy to use either voice notes or text in DMs.
Website
I add alt text to all images.
I am working towards having a text-only button on the bottom of each page.
All of my new downloads are available as videos with captions, audio and transcripts.
I work towards making sure my website content is as accessible as possible, limiting difficulties for screen readers by editing CSS to make adjustments.
Meetings and working with clients
After booking a meeting, you’re given the option to say if you would prefer Zoom, Zoom with camera off or a phone call in a feedback form.
I use Zoom as it allows captions on the call for anyone who needs them.
I can record the meeting at your request and send a copy to you.
I understand if you need to walk around, take breaks, stim or use other tools during our meeting.
I understand if you need to cancel at the last minute - we all have diverse, complicated lives (please just make me aware asap so we can re-arrange).
I understand the issues around rejection-sensitive dysphoria - if this is something that affects you, please make me aware if you feel it could be relevant in our working relationship.
I expect the same high standards of accessibility and inclusivity for anyone who works with me (other freelancers).
I understand that people process information in very different ways, and I will be happy to answer all questions and break down processes into steps or in a way that works best for you.
In Person
Before I attend networking events I carry out due diligence on the event to ensure the event organiser has considered accessibility and inclusion so that it aligns with my values. I may, at my discretion, leave the event if I feel that this hasn't been considered or withdraw from events that I feel don’t align with my values.
I don’t currently run in-person events, but if I were to, I would consult the services of an accessibility and inclusion consultant.
General
I will not tolerate any discrimination that contradicts my values.
I look for a wide range of representation and experiences for my podcast guests.
I respect people’s pro nouns and lived experiences.
I like everyone, have subconscious conditioning that I am working toward being more aware of. I understand that as a white, female with ADHD, I have a certain amount of privilege in comparison to others and I try to use that in my active allyship by spreading awareness with respect to the vast intersections of disabilities across marginalised communities and the global majority.
If you have any feedback in relation to the information outlined on this page, or how I run my business, please do get in contact with me either by email addressed to Sam Milburn hello@pageonestudio.co.uk, or please feel free to DM me or voice note me on my Instagram www.instagram.com/pageonestudio_
